![]() It offers a different take of being open, yet it is very familiar to what we mean by being open. ![]() The coffee houses of Europe (commonly referred to as Penny Universities) are built around the concept of ‘discursive sociability’ (Ellis, 2008). In this post, I draw parallels from the coffee house models of the early seventeenth century to find answers to these questions.Ī recent conscious decision at my workplace to indulge in an intentional coffee break for open conversations, discussions and socialisation, following the Swedish Fika time (pronounced “fee-kah”), prompted me delve deeper to understand the coffee house model and see the connections with being open. What does ‘being open’ mean and what is its value? Does the value lie in open content? Does the value lie in the interactions that occur through discussions? Does the value lie in openness created within social places, and not always confined to an institutional setting? How do we want to open our society, our community?
